Guardians of the Galaxy

When this movie came out, everyone said that it was Marvel's best movie yet. I am not sure that I agree with this. It was an amazing movie, but I didn't feel like it was a Marvel movie because it was so different. Instead of being about superheroes, Guardians of the Galaxy  focuses on your stereotypical group of criminals with a heart of gold who band together to become heroes despite what everyone else thinks they are capable of. This is a very different genre and feel from the other Marvel stories; it's more like a sci-fi action/adventure sort of thing...plus it's in space. Had I read Marvel Comics growing up, this movie may not have felt so disconnected from the rest. Especially since Thanos does actually have a big role coming up in Avengers: Infinity Wars . Besides the fact that this movie felt disconnected from the Marvel universe, it was really good. The characters are all unique and relatable. They may be a starlord, an alien princess, a (somewhat) talking tree,...

Corner Gas: The Movie

This one will really only be familiar to my Canadian readers out there. If you ever watched the TV show, the movie was essentially a very long episode that was added on years after the finale. Fitzy has caused the town to go bankrupt and so everyone is getting ready to leave now that they have no power or water. Then the Coff-Nuts coffee shop company comes looking to put in a regional distribution centre. At the same time, Brent tries to save the town by entering it in the quaintest town competition. If. He can keep the town going, then Lacey won't move away. All of the loveable characters are up to their usual weirdness. Wanda is using Davis' garage to run an illegal casino since he has back-up generators and soundproof garage walls. Davis himself has been forced to retire and is working as a P.I. Karen is married and pregnant, but trying to improve her success as a cop. Oscar has traded his car for a horse which keeps getting taken from him. As one would expect, everything go...

To my fellow Canadians, happy Victoria Day weekend! Don't know why, but this quote spoke to me today.

Jumper

I was not expecting to enjoy this movie when I first came across it. Let me explain. I was watching a show and when it ended I took too long to change the channel and so I started watching the movie without knowing what it was. I was hooked. Jumper  follows a young boy whose mother left when he was young and whose father is abusive. When helping his best friend (who is also his crush) to get back her snow globe that a bully through away, he falls through the ice. Before he dies, he accidentally teleports to the library. He decides to tell his best friend that he is alive, but chickens out and ends up using his powers to gather what he needs and disappear by hiding out in a motel. Flash forward and he has used his powers to get rich. However, there is a group of religious fanatics that are hunting jumpers because they feel that only God should have the power to be everywhere at once. The rest of the movie is, as with most action movies, about his trying to escape the people hunting ...

Sunday Sayings ~ Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to my beautiful mom and all the amazing moms out there. These are for you: I would also like to include a little quote from The Gathering Storm  by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (which I just read). Moms are the ones who stay strong so that we don't have to, and while this quote isn't made to be about moms, I believe that we could easily change "queens" to "moms". "Life was a tempest, whether you were a milkmaid or a queen. The queens were simply better at projecting control in the middle of that storm." Happy Mother's Day!
