Legally Blonde
After being dumped by her rich, successful boyfriend, Elle decides to prove that she is more than just a trophy or a pretty face. So she studies her hardest and, using her own unique "skills" and characteristics, she manages to get into Harvard School of Law. The story really isn't that complicated. She struggles, but actually managed to put in a lot of hard work. She doesn't fit in at first, but she gains some friendship, especially from her ex's new fiancé. One of her professors chooses her to be one of his select interns to help with his current case. Thanks to her way of seeing things, and her unusually thorough knowledge of celebrity and beauty, Elle realizes that the woman whom they are defending in court has, in fact, been wrongfully arrested for the murder of her husband. And, as with all chick flicks, she realizes that she doesn't still love her ex, and falls for her professor's firm partner.
There are also a couple of small side plots. The first involves Elle helping a woman at a beauty salon to get with the mailman, since the two have long had crushes on one another. The other one involves the professor, as Elle finds out that her job in his firm is not due to her prowess in law, but rather her looks.
This was surprisingly cute, and definitely a light and easy movie to watch. Elle is a little bit more like a charicature than a regular woman sometimes, but the exaggeration is almost necessary for some of the silliness of the movie. Plus, she develops a lot by the end, becoming very likeable.
My favourite casting choice for this movie had to be Victor Garber as the professor. As a Canadian, I've seen him in a number of things, and I am partly a fan of him just because he is Canadian as well. That is not to say that I don't appreciate his acting skills. He is very talented, and he is in so many great things. What I thought was sort of funny about this role was that he was playing a somewhat promiscuous and inappropriate older gentleman, since he is gay.
The epilogue portion of this movie has everything turn out exactly as you would want and expect. If you're looking for a rom com that you don't have to get too deeply invested in, this might just be it.
