Magic and Moonlight

So I know that my profile says I'm an amateur writer, but besides blogs I've never written anything for you guys. Here is a short story I wrote yesterday inspired by Nox Arcana's song Magic and Moonlight . I hope you enjoy it. Every night Peter would creep out into the snowy woods. He knew that it was forbidden, but something indescribable about the place always drew him back. Sometimes he swore that he woke to find that his feet had already carried him across the lawn and deep into the forest. As he got closer, the ethereal music became clearer. The crunch of snow under his feet sounded simmulated in comparison. Finally, Peter arrived at the spot where the moonlight touched the earth. The clearing was rimmed by trees, like a palace room full of columns. A mosaic of ash-black sky and twinkling stars was grander than any dome a master craftsman could construct. And there they were, emerging from opposing sides of the rustic castle. It didn't seem to mat

The Last Goodbye

In the words of Lady Antebellum, "Hello world!" I know that I've stopped working off of my list of books and movies for the most part, and I promise to go back. But for now, I have other things that I want to also be able to share with you which, honestly (and sadly, you might say) I am posting these other things because they are much quicker. Besides, I want to share this with you now. I don't remember if I said this before, but I watched The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies during the holidays, and I had been looking forward to it since the first one came out. I have lived off of Tolkien's books and the movies since I was 10. And I love every part of it. For me, much like for Tolkien, Middle Earth was a real place, and that was where I belonged: among the elves in the forests of Lothlorien, walking the halls of Rivendell, with hobbits in a hole in a hill in the Shire, in the Mines of Moria with the dwarves, flying on the back of Great Eagles with wizards.

A little something for my literary friends out there.

I'm Waiting for Superman

I recently rediscovered this song while listening to my music on shuffle. And I'm hooked. I know that I loved it from the first note I ever heard, but for some reason I am so obsessed right now. I've been really focussing on my future and trying to find that balance between hope and fantasizing. I don't know if that is the reason, or if my heart is just in a different place, but I feel like these lyrics were written for me. If you haven't heard it (or even if you have) please take a listen.   "Waiting for Superman" by Daughtry

The Self-Inflicted Disease: Addiction

We've all heard about drug and alcohol addiction and how it is such a terrible disease. "They can't control it," people say. Sometimes it is said that addiction controls the person. But what is the first step to rehabilitation? If television has taught me anything valid about this, it's that the first step to fixing your problem (a nice way of saying "getting rid of your addiction") is admitting that you have a problem. You have to accept that you are responsible for the difficulties in your life. But wait, haven't we told them over and over that it is a disease? If it is a disease, how can it be their fault? Type 1 Diabetes, cancer, IBS; these are diseases. These are things that come about as a result of internal issues or genetics. Of course we know that addiction is nothing like these. So then it's not a disease. So why do we tell them it is? We allow them to believe that addiction is not their fault. We want them to get help, but we a

Much Ado About Nothing

Even though this is a play, I read this one. Although, as with all Shakespeare works, one must always watch a video version (or at least parts) to get a feel for how it is supposed to be performed and how the delivery of the lines makes a difference. Now I will not say that I dislike Shakespeare, since that would be a lie. However, I am definitely not his biggest fan. I must admit that while the stories are all unique, they have so many similarities. The tragedies all follow the same general descent of great kings, and the comedies are all about lovers in disguises and the one criminal who never gets his happy ending because he is a criminal. So this story is about the love between Hero and Claudio. Claudio and his friend Benedick are soldiers and close friends of the prince Don Pedro. Benedick has many word battles with Beatrice, Hero's cousin. When I say the play is about Claudio and Hero, I mean that it is supposed to be. In reality, it is about Benedick and Beatrice prete

Wicked

Knowing that the majority of my blogs thus far have been about movies and books, you are probably expecting that Wicked  refers to the novel. Sadly for you, this assumption would be wrong. It is, in fact, referring to the Broadway/stage production based on the book by the same name. That's right! I went to the theatre with my family for my sister's birthday. And the journey to get there is a story in itself. Let me make it brief without taking away the   thrills of the adventure. My parents both went to school and/or lived in Toronto in the past and so feel that they know the city fairly well. Note: it has been a long time since they have been downtown on a regular basis. We pulled into a parking lot a block or two away from the Mirvish block of theatres and walk of fame stuff. My parents were under the impression that the Ed Mirvish theatre was in this area. If you know Toronto, you know that they were wrong. But no one had bothered to check directions because they both assume
