Sunday Sayings - Superhero Talk

This one has some thoughts that come with it. I know I've done an extensive post of superhero stuff before, but I like to bring them up once in a while. This is partly because I wasn't as drawn to them when I was a child, for whatever reason, as I am now, so now I want to talk about them. Although, that seems to be true of our society as a whole right now.
I was listening to a message today, and the preacher was asking why it is that we are so drawn to superheroes. His little boy came up and said that it was because they have special powers and because they save people. The speaker pointed out that it's because they affirm our feelings of needing to make a difference in the world. They inspire us to make a change and help others. But we also aspire to their fame and glory. All of these are true.
But my first real exposure to superheroes came from the X-Men. And I'll tell you something: none of those things were part of what drew me to this crew of mutants. What I connected with was that feeling of being different. Maybe even the feeling of needing to have seclusion and trying to blend in. But I also like that they embraced their uniqueness (yes, even the "villains" embrace their powers; and really the regular humans tend to turn out to be more of the villain-characters in many situations, rather than Magneto's crew).
I like that many of the superheroes, like Captain America, or even the Hulk, are not necessarily proud of their powers. Yes, Hulk has reason to hate his, and yes, Captain America does use them to fight in wars, but they are not arrogant and they don't want the fame. I like that these people take their unique skills and they use them to help others rather than themselves. Which is, if you noticed, one of the points that the speaker was getting at.
So now that I've come full circle in this, let me share today's Sunday Saying with you.
