Star Trek Beyond

[Warning: contains spoilers] This movie is set about three years after the last one, and Kirk is getting bored of all the exploration and peace missions. Luckily for Kirk this is a movie, so we know something big is going to happen. Kirk is also upset because his birthday is coming up, which makes him think of his father and what it means to live up to that legacy as well as make his own. Uhura and Spock are going through a rough breakup, so our main characters aren't in the best place emotionally. When they stop in Yorktown, Kirk asks to be promoted to a council job on base and to have Spock take his place as captain. Finally, our conflict begins. The Federation receives a distress signal from an alien whose ship has apparently malfunctioned, stranding her crew on the far side of the nebula, and the Enterprise is sent on a rescue mission. Reawakened: A Once Upon a Time Tale by Odette Beane As you likely already know, I love Once Upon a Time. Therefore, when I saw that the stories (or at least some) had been turned into a book, it was only logical to buy said book. This novel is simply a retelling of the first season of the show, in which each chapter is one of the episodes. The plot is the same, the characters are the same, the only real difference is the media being used to tell the story. I must admit that I got more into the show than the book, but perhaps this was because I already knew everything that was going to happen. Still, it was almost as good as watching it. One of the added benefits of the book is that the author was able to explore how the characters felt and other background details that may not always come across to the viewers on screen. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

The first thing you need to know about Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency  is that it doesn't really make sense unless you're familiar with the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. That may seem odd, but I promise you that knowing this famous Romantic writer is crucial to the mystery being investigated by the title character, and the author includes many other more subtle nods to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner . The next thing you need to know is that Douglas Adams' writing style is nothing short of bizarre. However, he uses science fiction, mystery, and horror elements in the most uniquely comedic ways. His narrative voice is fantastically whimsical, and he somehow manages to approach all topics--from the mundane to downright gruesome--from a whole new perspective.
